First Command Intern Program

The First Command™ Financial Planning Intern Program provides college students majoring in financial planning, finance, business or a related area of study the opportunity to fulfill college degree requirements as they learn first-hand about the financial planning profession and financial services industry.

Through the program, interns can observe financial planning professionals at work and:

  • Deepen their understanding of the financial services industry and the financial planning profession
  • Learn how an individual financial planning/financial services business operates
  • Discover what knowledge and skills are required for an entry-level financial planner
  • Gain an understanding of the administrative and compliance requirements of the profession
  • Increase knowledge, enhance skills and develop professional goals
  • Complete a special project to gain insight into a specific facet of the industry or business operations

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Participants in the Financial Planning Intern Program may fulfill college degree requirements by completing 360 hours of employment, either in First Command’s corporate offices in Fort Worth, Texas, or in one of its District offices nationwide.

The program’s sequence and highlights include:

  • Weeks 1-2: Introduction to First Command philosophies, code of ethics, organizational structure, planning process, Advisor training and Advisor career track
  • Weeks 3-4: Introduction to First Command proprietary financial planning software and various Advisor training modules, attendance at client appointments and District functions
  • Week 5: Introduction to District marketing plans, District recruiting plans and District business operations
  • Weeks 6-9: Introduction to goal setting and calendar management, development of personal and professional goals, preparation of business plan, and attendance at client appointments and District functions

Additionally, an intern’s First Command sponsor may assign a special project, such as analysis of competitors’ business models or local market research, to be ongoing throughout the internship.
