First Command launches landmark industry research initiative
Financial Behaviors Index links consumer behaviors to feelings of hope and optimism

Fort Worth, TX – First Command Financial Services, Inc. today announced a landmark research initiative that tracks the financial behaviors of middle- to upper-income Americans and how these behaviors provide a sense of emotional security in uncertain economic times.

The two-year study, which assesses the financial behaviors and attitudes of 9,300 American families interviewed between 2006 and 2008, demonstrates a direct link between specific financial behaviors and levels of optimism or pessimism about the future. The study also forms the foundation of the First Command Financial Behaviors Index, a new quarterly report of monthly tracking surveys designed to understand the changing financial behaviors of the American public.

“Feelings of financial security and optimism have dropped significantly over the past two years,” said Marty Durbin, president and chief operating officer of First Command. “But even as many observers warn of a coming recession, our research reveals that families who systematically save and have actively established financial plans feel significantly more secure and optimistic about the future.”
