First Command joins in sponsorship of Military Spouse of the Year award

May 7, 2018

FORT WORTH, Texas – First Command Financial Services, Inc. is proud to serve as a silver sponsor for the 2018 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year® Award, continuing its long history of supporting the wives and husbands of career service members.

The annual award, which was established by Military Spouse magazine in 2008, has honored hundreds of military spouses for their advocacy and support within the military community. This year's honorees include Katy Stevick, a First Command Financial Advisor and the 2018 base winner representing Fort Bragg. She will be among the many spouses, community leaders and military friendly employers who will be attending or recognized at the Town Hall on May 9 and awards ceremony on May 10 in Washington, D.C.

“First Command is honored to support the award alongside Armed Forces Insurance, which is the title sponsor of the event and our property and casualty insurance partner, ” said Scott Spiker, chairman/CEO of First Command. “This year we are celebrating 60 years of serving our Nation's career military families, and we're doing it with a special focus on recognizing and supporting the spouses of service members.”

As part of its sponsorship activities, First Command will also be recognizing military spouse entrepreneurs. The company will be presenting the 2018 military branch winners with gifts it purchased from the following spouse-owned businesses:

  • Massage Envy (franchise operator),
  • Bath and Body Works (franchise operator),
  • Hope Design Ltd., and
  • R. Riveter.

First Command's commitment to military spouses is underscored by the recognition that these women and men are the key financial decision makers for their families and face unique challenges in their pursuit of meaningful careers.

“Military spouses often shoulder the primary responsibility for household budgeting and savings,” Spiker said. “They must manage family finances during those times when the active-duty spouse is deployed for extended periods and face unique challenges in finding and maintaining meaningful employment because of frequent moves. They carry the burden of knowing that they will face these responsibilities alone in the event of a combat death. And at the end of active-duty service, military spouses play a critical role in navigating the financial complexities of the family's transition to civilian life. The MSOY Award offers yet another opportunity to support military spouses and causes that matter to our Nation's military families.”
