Why We Care

Why We Care

First Command knows the value of military spouses and their contributions. In fact, we are consistently recognized as a Military Friendly® Spouse Employer, and we were honored to win the prestigious 2020 Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Employment and Mentoring Award.

We believe the AFI MSOY program is instrumental in giving spouses a platform for their voices and recognizing their accomplishments. By sponsoring Military Spouse of the Year 2020, we honor our commitment to support military spouses and celebrate their achievements.

How It Works

How It Works

Nominations of deserving military spouses will be accepted through January 24, 2020. To see all rules and criteria, visit msoy.afi.org/theprogram. Once the nominations are locked in, voting will commence. Anyone can vote, but as winners are announced at different levels, the weighting of the vote will be spread across the popular vote, the Judge Advisor Panel vote and the AFI MSOY Panel vote.

Base Voting

Once nominations are closed, Base voting begins. The nominees are organized by Base, district and state. The outcome at this stage is determined solely by popular vote, so getting friends and family to participate is especially important. The nominee with the most votes at each Base, district or state will advance to the next round for consideration.

Top 18 and Branch Voting

The spouses that receive the most votes during Base voting will go through another round of voting to determine the Top 18. Video interviews of the candidates will be publicized to aid the voting process. Once the Top 18 are selected, they will move to the Branch level vote. At the Branch level, the six candidates with the highest combined score based on the popular vote, the AFI MSOY Panel and the Judge Advisory Panel will advance to the final round.
